What route did you take to QTS and how did you come to apply for a role in a Hounslow school?

I took a PGCE at Liverpool Hope University. Because I wanted to work in London I applied for this job through an advert I saw from Hounslow in the Times Educational Supplement, as I felt an Outer London school would be a good place to start.

What are your reflections on completing your Induction Year with Hounslow?

I am really happy with the choice I made because Hounslow as a borough offers a really diverse range of students. Working in a school with a high EAL percentage on roll has been a rewarding challenge.

What do you think of the support and training that was offered to you as an NQT by your school and the LA?

The school provision has been outstandingly good and I have felt fully supported in all aspects of my induction. Similarly, the training that I have had access to from the LA has been very beneficial and of high quality, allowing me to learn from the expertise of other professionals.

Has working in a diverse borough helped to develop your teaching skills?

Most definitely. Primarily, working with EAL students – and teachers- has developed my skills significantly. But in addition to this working in a culturally diverse area with a variety of religious festivals has added to the thematic enrichment of my teaching, particularly at KS3.

Do you think that you have been encouraged to develop professionally and increase your skills as a teacher?

My focus has been primarily to complete this year successfully, but I am aware that I am being continually encouraged to think beyond this and effort has been made to find relevant CPD training.

What would you say to an NQT to encourage them to come and teach in Hounslow?

If you want a quiet life then Hounslow is not the place. But if you thrive on variety, challenge, and interest then this borough can certainly offer all of that. I was surprised by how much of a sense of community exists here and this certainly supports the education of Hounslow students and makes it a pleasant and safe place to work.

What 3 words describe your experience as an NQT in the borough?

Lively, challenging, rewarding.
